Brene: A river mammal common in Sevalia. Brenes are brown and furry with sharp little claws and teeth. Brenes eat fish and water lizards, mostly. Brenes stink to high heaven, due to a bacteria in their skin. The same bacteria apparently makes brene a tasty treat when cooked properly. Vardelen (riding animal): Also known colloquilly as vards, vardelen are bred all over Verentis, but Tirandes and Lirsalis provide the best breeds, with Lirsalis breeds the most highly prized. There is also an illegal breed of vardelen which has a poisonous bite. Also called gardell. Herbivores

Tani: The bird of ill omen, the tani have their own protective deity Opiren, who is also the subject of a Krishari cult. The tani are blood-sucking but otherwise raven-like birds found on the islands of Tasseris and the Albir Gulf. Trocas: An animal often associated with field slaves, the trocas provides additional labor on estates and are used as draft animals for pulling carts and wagons. Also called pack lizard. Omnivores

Elcas: Also called org, the elcas is a vicious meat producer. Diet: omnivore; Strategy: diurnal gatherer; Average Lifespan: 10 yrs; Weight: 100 kg; Weapons: tusks; Armor: none.

Scavengers

Vulcade: A flying, feathered saurian of the mountain regions between Savideche, and Aurelia. Habitat: warm mountains; Activity: Day; Type: carrion-eater; Average Lifespan: 20 yrs; Weight: 15 kg; Weapons: beak; Armor: none.

Plants

Grains

Aulicas: A popular but expensive grain, because the procedures for growing are so difficult. Aulicas can be made into flat salted cakes, cooked into bowls and heavily spiced, or fashioned into various candies.

Greppis: Greppis is ground into meal for making bread, or fermented for making beer. Greppis is cheap and nutritious and can be cooked into a hot cereal.

Viretis: A variety of grain related to Goerthan geith.

Fruits and Vegetables

Auriline: A brown, oil-bearing fruit oblong in shape, about 1 cm in diameter and 3 cm long. Although its oil is used widely in cooking and industry, the auriline is not generally eaten. However, a cluster of them might decorate a table.

Saramean: The fruit of the saramean tree is bright orange and round, about 4 cm in diameter. The skin is smooth and sometimes marked with brown flecks. Its pulp is whitish and crisp, and it has a rich flavor like cinnamon apple.

Herbs and Flowers

Arimmean: A bright, lightly scented flower, the arimmean grows plentifully in the wild. It is considered a commoner's flower.

Pouria: A cinnamon brown flower, heavily scented. The pouria is a symbol of romance and mystery.

Vellinice: A delicate, complex flower. The vellinice conjures images of excess and overanalyzed indulgences.

Trees and Shrubs

Argis: A hardwood tree used for furniture making. This is the same tree as the Goerthan arach.

Sirannes: A common spikey shrub of the Estirian region. It is an annoyance to travellers, but also a favorite ingredient for herbalists in a variety of brews.

Turin: The Verentian name for the Drue shrub.
