Verentian Calendar

The most commonly used calendar is the Imperial Common Calendar, also called the Verentian Calendar. Dates are abbreviated E.E. or V.C. starting from the year of the founding of the city of Ascalis.

Wealth Levels

The basic unit of currency is the penny ('p'). For convenience, the '$' symbol is used to represent one hundred pennies. Generally, a penny is enough to feed one person for one day at subsistence level.

Education

Attending most schools promotes a character's learning rate (LR) to 3. Particularly rigourous training increases LR to 4. In addition, the GM may reward temporary increases to LR above 4 for creative role-playing, quality teachers/institutions, or other reasons.

Education

Village Militia Training: Once a year in the summer, the boys come out and play. Adventurer/Fighter skills.

Guild Apprenticeships: Two to seven years apprenticeships are at Learning Rate 3, as future craftsmen spend time in the shop doing more work than anyone else.

Squirehood: A type of apprenticeship, only for Fighter skills.

Education

Bourdonnese Gladiator School: Gladiators for arenas all over the Empire are trained here by the best. Since most gladiators are slaves, their training is paid for by their masters. Fees are fairly high, about 1% typical upper class income; more for the most rigourous training. Gladiators are trained at Learning Rate 4 and pushed beyond the limit, so injuries may occur. Also, since live weapons are used, trainees who do not spend at least 75% of experience earned on the skills being taught also increase the chance for injury. No compensation is given for injuries that occur during training, so buyer beware.

The gladiator school teaches real fighting techniques with a variety of duelling weapons, as well as wrestling and fisticuffs, acrobatics, and theatrics. Some physical training also takes place, allowing gladiators to improve strength, endurance, and agility.

Legovis's School of Fencing: A hole in the wall in a lower middle class neighborhood, Legovis's School of Fencing nevertheless has many a noble patron. Despite offers to relocate or host his school, Legovis has steadfastly remained in the old neighborhood. Maybe because his favorite tavern is across the street.

Legovis teaches three different fencing weapons, as well as the general Fighter field. In fact, he specializes in teaching the Fighter "art" more so than the weapon techniques, which he disdains as "details."

University of Tirreter: Targetted toward the upper middle class and nobility, the University of Tirreter offers classes in all Scholar skills, as well as some Caregiver, Merchant, and Magician skills. The rigourous educational environment can also improve Intelligence, Perceptivity, Willpower, and Charisma.

The University is expensive, but students can learn at Learning Rate 3 to 4. Research can also be performed here, particularly in Histories and the Sciences (e.g., there are several alchemical labs available for research assistants). In addition to its normal library, the UofT also has a complete collection of the Tales of the Carnelian Coast.

Education

Clerical School: These schools teach official priests or priest candidates theology, ritual, literacy, and astrology.

Military Academy - Naval School: This school teaches fleet tactics, navigation and piloting, leadership, and general swordsmanship.

Military Academy - Rider School: These schools teach riding (vardelens), mounted combat with the javelin and longsword, leadership, strategy and tactics, and general swordsmanship.

Universities: These schools are primarily concerned with training scholars, philosopjers, and politicians in law, literature, history, geography, mathematics, and theology.
